Dear Customer
Volkswagen Group has been working closely with the relevant authorities to obtain approval for our technical measures for all models affected in Europe. We appreciate your patience on this matter while we developed these technical measures.
The technical solutions for the 2.0-litre, 1.6-litre and 1.2-litre TDI engines have already been fundamentally approved by the KBA, the German Federal Motor Transport Authority. The implementation of the solution for affected vehicles with the 2.0-litre TDI engine has already started. Further clusters will be gradually approved after tests by KBA have been conducted. Volkswagen expects to receive approval for other high-volume models shortly. As stated at our AGM, we have the approval for circa 3.7 million cars already. By late 2016, a technical solution should have been approved for all vehicles. The technical measure will involve a software update to the engine management system. We expect that it will take around 30 minutes to complete this software update, and we expect vehicles to be returned within the same day. The implementation of the 2.0-litre TDI engine measures has already commenced and will continue to be rolled out during 2016. Our objective is to achieve the applicable emissions targets without affecting engine output, fuel consumption, CO2 emissions or performance.
For the 1.6-litre TDI engine, the technical measure involves the fitting of a ‘flow transformer’ directly in front of the air mass sensor. This transformer is a mesh that stabilises the air flow in front of the sensor to improve its accuracy. Accurate measurement of air mass is a very important factor in achieving an optimum combustion process. Also, we will perform a software update to the engine management system. We expect to complete both processes in less than one hour, and we expect vehicles to be returned within the same day. We cannot specify exact dates at this time, but we anticipate the 1.6-litre TDI engine measures will arrive in the third quarter of 2016.
For the 1.2-litre TDI engine, the technical measure will involve a software update to the engine management system. We expect that it will take around 30 minutes to complete this software update, and we expect vehicles to be returned within the same day. The implementation of the 1.2-litre TDI engine measures has begun in recent days.
